„Rockin´ Hinterland – The Final one“ – Martina Gerlach lädt zum letzten großartigen 3-Tage-Festival in Dautphe ein!

Wir alle kennen Musiker, Artisten, Darsteller, Künstler und viele mehr, die in der Regel nur auf der Bühne stehen und uns mit ihrer Darbietung so beeindrucken. Dazu dann noch die vielen Veranstalter, die Organisatoren, die alles überhaupt möglich machen und ein großes Rad im Ganzen sind. Doch was steckt hinter diesen Menschen, die uns begeistern?

Was machen sie abseits ihrer tollen Arbeit? Was treibt sie immer wieder an, uns tolle Erlebnisse zu bescheren? Wie sind sie zu dieser Stilrichtung gekommen, welche Erfahrungen haben sie gemacht und welche Pläne haben sie für die Zukunft? Genau das richtige für ein Interview, wo man ihnen mal auf den Zahn fühlt. Sei gespannt auf kleine interessante Geschichten abseits der Bühne und der Arbeit und lerne unbekannte Seiten dieser Menschen kennen, die unser Leben bereichern. Auf geht´s!

Heute sind wir in den unaussprechlichen Ort Dautphe zwischen Siegen und Marburg nach Hessen gefahren, wo wir Martina Gerlach trafen, die Organisatorin von „Rocking Hinterland“. Vom 11.-13. August 2023 steigt die 8. Neuauflage der legendären Veranstaltung, die sich schon über viele Jahre als Kultveranstaltung entwickelt und etabliert hat. Doch diesmal soll es die letzte Veranstaltung von „Rockin´ Hinterland“ sein – The Final one!

Presse-Media-Online.de: Hallo Martina, schön das Du Dir extra an Deinem freien Montag etwas Zeit für ein kleines Interview genommen hast. Schau mal was wir Dir mitgebracht haben: Zwei leckere 6er-Pack-Kölsch, das Bier womit Du aufgewachsen bist. Oder hast Du sogar Kölsch in Deinem Restaurant?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Oh, das ist sehr lieb von Euch. Aber schau mal hier: Wir haben uns neben der regulären Zapfanlage einen Extra-Hahn für Kölsch bauen lassen und es läuft hier wie Wasser. Vielleicht liegt es daran das die Gäste wissen, dass ich voll dahinterstehe.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, bevor wir über Deine Veranstaltung sprechen: Erklär uns doch bitte mal wie es Dich hierher verschlagen konnte. Du bist in Siegburg aufgewachsen, also ein richtiges rheinisches Mädchen, wie konnte das mit Dautphe passieren?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): … (lacht…) Tja, das frage ich mich auch… aber wie heißt es so schön: Wo die Liebe hinfällt… Im Dezember sind Thomas und ich 35 Jahre megaglücklich verheiratet. Er teilt meine Liebe zur Rockmusik und wir haben immer jeden Tag viel Spaß miteinander. Für mich war Thomas die beste Entscheidung meines Lebens.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Ja, Du betreibst hier mit Deinem Mann Thomas ein Restaurant, das „Chilis“, wo man vorzüglich speisen kann und auch noch einen tollen Biergarten vorfindet. Seit wann habt ihr das Restaurant und seit wann bist Du und Thomas in der Gastronomie tätig?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Also Thomas hat mit dem „Chilis“ eher weniger zu tun. Er hilft aus, wenn es ungeplant “brennt“ und spült mir jede Woche die Bierleitungen. Nach dem ich 20 Jahre als Sekretärin im Vorzimmer gesessen habe, entstand die Idee des „Chilis“ aus einer Schnapsidee im Ski-Urlaub. Zurück von dort, habe ich mein ganzes Leben über den Haufen geworfen und ein Lokal aufgemacht. Das war die zweitbeste Entscheidung meines Lebens. Übrigens, nächstes Jahr wird das „Chilis“ 20 Jahre alt.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, ein ganz ernstes Thema: Der Kölner Karneval! Du bist ein Siegburger Mädchen, also faktisch mit dem Kölner Karneval aufgewachsen. Wie kommst Du damit hier in Hessen zurecht? Zieht es Dich in der Karnevalszeit immer noch nach Köln?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Oh ja! Aber auf jeden Fall. Am 11.11. geht es los und auch viele meiner hessischen Freundinnen begleiten mich mittlerweile in die rheinische Hauptstadt des Karnevals nach Köln. Dieses Jahr geht es am 11.11. mit dem Tross in den „Tanzbrunnen“, vorher nehmen wir noch die Kultband „Brings & Beethoven Orchester“ auf dem Roncalliplatz mit, direkt vor unserer kleinen Dorfkirche und zu welcher Weihnachtsshow ich wie jedes Jahr einlade, darf ich leider noch nicht verraten. Meinen Mann habe ich in all den Jahren langsam an den kölschen Karneval herangeführt und du glaubst gar nicht, wie textsicher er in der „Lachenden Kölnarena“ ist … (lacht….). Die Hessen nennen es Fasching und es ist absolut nicht vergleichbar.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Kommen wir zu Deiner Veranstaltung „Rockin´ Hinterland“. In 10 Tagen hast Du schon die 8. Veranstaltung. Überall ist zu hören und zu lesen, dass es die letzte Ausgabe sein soll. Bist Du da sicher, dass dieses traditionelle Rockmusik-Fest wirklich das letzte Mal bei Euch über die Bühne geht?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Also der  Hauptgrund ist, dass ich nicht mehr die Jüngste bin und wer schon einmal so etwas organisiert hat, weiß wieviel Arbeit und schlaflose Nächte daran hängen. Neben dem regulären Restaurantbetrieb ist das kaum zu stemmen. Nun habe ich mir auch noch vor vier Wochen den Knöchel gebrochen und jeder Gang fällt mir doppelt schwer.

Nein, ich möchte mir das nicht mehr antun und doch plane ich bereits das nächste Konzert zum „20-jährigen Chilis-Jubiläum“ im kommenden Jahr.  Aber nicht mehr in dieser Größenordnung von zwei oder drei Tagen. Vielmehr werde ich dann selber Gast sein auf den vielen Festivals, die ich mit meinen Quo-Freunden schon seit vielen Jahren besuche.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Wie bist Du eigentlich auf den Veranstaltungsnamen „Rockin´ Hinterland“ gekommen? Was steckt dahinter?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Der Name stammt nicht von mir und ehrlich gesagt, gut finde ich das auch nicht. Unser ehemaliger Bürgermeister hatte in 2013 die ganzen Status Quo-Plakate im „Chilis“ gesehen und mich schließlich überredet, Status Quo nach Dautphe zu holen. Da das Festival einen Namen haben sollte und ich nur der Gehilfe zur Kontaktherstellung zur Band war, wurde der Festivalname seitens der Gemeinde festgelegt.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Die Geschichte mit dem Festival hat bei Dir im Jahre 2014 angefangen. Wie ist es Dir gelungen, Status Quo, diese weltberühmte Rockband aus England, die über 110 Millionen Tonträger verkauft hat und in früheren Jahren als beste Liveband der Welt galt und über die Bühnen rasten, zu engagieren?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“: Nachdem mich unser damaliger Bürgermeister überzeugt hatte, folgte ein halbes Jahr intensiver Vorbereitungen mit der Gemeinde und dem Eigentümer Herrn Schorge. Da sollten Straßenlaternen auf dem Parkplatz des Einkaufzentrum in Dautphe abmontiert werden, um Platz für die große Bühne zu schaffen, der Hubschrauberlandeplatz für das DRK war für die Hinterlandhalle vorgesehen.

Es mussten unzählige Dinge geklärt werden, u.a. die Parkplätze an der Schule, die Busumleitung, Production Office im Rathaus und Backstagebereiche im jetzigen VDK und „Chilis“. Der Konzertanbieter Eventim wurde eingeschaltet, die Tickets waren gedruckt. Alle waren in großer Vorfreude, dann kam 5 Tage vor dem Konzert die Nachricht, das Rick Parfitt eine Herzattacke in der Pula Arena in Croatia ein paar Stunden vor dem Auftritt hatte. Die Folge: Alle folgenden Konzerte wurden abgesagt, somit auch unser Konzert in Dautphe.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Bei der ganzen Vorbereitungsarbeit muss das doch ein Schock für Dich gewesen sein?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Das kann man wohl so sagen. Ich habe gedacht ich bin im falschen Film. Als Samstag die ersten Anrufe bei mir aufliefen, hielt ich das zunächst für einen Scherz. Dann habe ich mich sofort mit KBK, Quo`s Agentur in München, in Verbindung gesetzt, die wussten von nichts und haben mich erstmal beruhigt, ich möge bis Montag abwarten. Das war allerdings ein Fehler. Hätten wir am Samstag vorher noch die 40.000 € Bühne für Quo abgesagt, hätten wir die Wochenfrist einhalten können.

Von Montag bis Sonntag war das dann keine ganze Woche mehr und wir mussten eine Vertragsstrafe an den Bühnenbauer zahlen. Gottseidank hat das der Hauptsponsor übernommen. Überhaupt hatten wir mit KBK eine Menge Ärger im Vorfeld der Organisation, nichts konnten wir denen Recht machen. Immer haben Sie versucht uns Ihren Willen aufzuzwängen, sei es bei der Plakatgestaltung oder der Auswahl der Support Band. Von dieser Agentur halte ich verständlicherweise überhaupt nichts.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Was hast Du dann gemacht? Wie hast Du reagiert?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Viele Fans hatten Tickets für das abgesagte Konzert und wir bemühten uns um eine Lösung. Aus der Not heraus wurde mit Hilfe des Hinterländers und einer Idee von Marita Gliesche, innerhalb von 5 Tagen eine Bühne, PA und Bands organisiert und das Festival „Rockin` Hinterland“ war geboren.

Die heimische Coverband „The Meadowbrookes“ mit Frontman Darko Ceh und die aus Belgien stammende Status Quo Tributeband „The Belgian Quo Band“, kurz „BQB“ genannt, hatten sich angeboten zu retten, was zu retten war. Ja, und was soll ich sagen: Die Veranstaltung war so erfolgreich, dass von nun an jedes Jahr ein 2-Tages Festival auf dem Rathausplatz vor dem „Chilis“ veranstaltet wurde und: In diesem Jahr zum letzten Mal.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Dieses Festival hat sich dann über Jahre etabliert. Und Du hast immer Wert daraufgelegt, dass eine Status Quo Tributeband mit im Programm war…

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Ja das stimmt, ich war und bin stets bemüht …

Presse-Media-Online.de: Eine Band vermisse ich hier bei deinem Abschlussprogramm. „She´s got Balls“, diese unglaubliche phantastische weibliche AC/DC-Tributeband. Warum hat es in diesem Jahr zum Abschluss nicht geklappt?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Ja, da gebe ich Dir völlig Recht. Das ist wirklich schade. Sie haben unsere Veranstaltung immer unheimlich bereichert. Leider ist Frontsängerin Iris Boanta in diesem Jahr an „Rockin´ Hinterland“ auf einer Hochzeit eingeladen und kann beim Abschied nicht. Es ist wirklich eine außergewöhnliche Band, die zuletzt fünfmal zu Europas bester AC/DC-Coverband ausgezeichnet wurde.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Im Jahr 2017 gelang Dir wieder ein Coup mit Deiner Veranstaltung. John „Rhino“ Edwards, Bassgitarrist bei Status Quo, spielte mit seiner Zweitband „Rhinos Revenge“ hier auf Deiner Bühne. Wie bist Du darangekommen?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Das Ding war der Oberknaller. „Rhino“ war gebucht, alles lief nach Plan. Zwei Monate vorher dann das Chaos. Status Quo hatte einen Gig in Dänemark, einen Tag bevor „Rhino“ bei uns auftreten sollte. Das wäre dann die zweite Absage von Quo gewesen. Aber ich wäre nicht ich, wenn ich mir das hätte gefallen lassen. „Rhino“ wusste ja um das ganze Theater aus 2014 und auch die Rückabwicklung der 2.500 verkauften Tickets hatten noch mal eine Menge Ärger und Arbeit verursacht.

So suchten wir dann gemeinsam eine Lösung, Plakate waren ja bereits gedruckt und ein zweites Mal eine Luftnummer, hätte dann doch meine Kompetenz in Frage gestellt. Und wir fanden eine Lösung: „Rhino“ setzte sich Freitagmorgen in Dänemark in den Flieger und wurde mittags von uns in Frankfurt Airport eingesammelt. Meine Freundin Ammi und ich fuhren ein paar Wochen vorher zum Status Quo-Gig auf die Loreley und sammelten „Rhinos“ Gitarren ein, lagerten diese ein paar Wochen im „Chilis“, damit „Rhino“ sie nicht auch noch von Dänemark im Flieger mitnehmen musste. Das war ein sehr großer Spaß.

Wir hatten eine Durchfahrtsgenehmigung, durften mit dem Auto bis hinter die Bühne fahren und waren den ganzen Tag Backstage. Wir haben mit Francis Kaffee getrunken und mit jedem ein Schwätzchen gehalten. Beim Konzert standen wir dann in der ersten Reihe. Ein schöner Tag. Im Januar sind Ammi und ich dann mit dem Auto nach London gefahren und haben „Rhino“ seine Gitarren zurückgebracht. Ein weiteres Highlight, wir hatten so viel Spaß dabei.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, vor 3 Jahren hielt Corona Einzug. Wie sehr hat es euer Restaurant „Chilis“ und auch „Rockin´ Hinterland“ in Mitleidenschaft gezogen?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Überhaupt nicht, im Gegenteil. Meine Mitbewerber haben sich im Lockdown alle auf die faule Haut gelegt und geschlossen, während das „Chilis“ Vollgas gegeben und Menüs außer Haus angeboten hat. Das war vom ersten Tag an ein vollen Erfolg und viele Gäste haben wir aus dieser Zeit behalten. Seit Corona läuft es besser denn je. Danke liebes Virus.

Vom „Rockin` Hinterland“ haben wir im Jahr 2021 eine Light-Version veranstaltet. Das Gesundheitsamt hatte allerdings Sitzplätze angeordnet und die Zuschauerzahl erheblich eingeschränkt. Wir hatten eine Beatles Tribute Band, deren Frontman Peter Seel auch in diesem Jahr als Frontman der Band Beat Radicals am Samstag wieder auf unserer Bühne stehen wird. Sitzen geblieben ist natürlich keiner, es war ein schöner Abend.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Uns ist aufgefallen, dass Du diesmal gleich ein 3-Tages-Festival veranstaltest. Was hat Dich dazu bewogen?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Das stimmt. Schau, es ist das letzte Festival in der Größenordnung. Und da wollten wir dem Publikum den Abschluss etwas versüßen und haben noch einen 3. Festivalstag, den Sonntagmorgen, angehängt. Wir freuen uns wieder ein Original-Mitglied von Status Quo, Gitarrist Richie Malone, zusammen mit der jungen deutschen Quo Tribute Band FRANTIC QUO aus Nordrhein-Westfalen auf Dautphes Bühne zu haben. So schließt sich der Kreis.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Ja die Nachricht vom Status Quo-Gitarristen Richie Malone machte schnell die Runde. Wie kam es zu diesem außergewöhnlichen Engagement? Kommt er extra aus UK hier rüber nach Deutschland?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Als die Plakate und Flyer für das diesjährige Festival bereits gedruckt waren, erfuhr ich, dass Richie Malone am Donnerstag und Freitag vor unserem Festival in Belgien spielt und damit hier „in der Nähe“ weilt. Da mein Rock´n´Roll-Herz ab da keine Ruhe mehr gab, habe ich ihn angerufen und gefragt, ob er nicht noch ein paar Tage dranhängen und nach Dautphe kommen möchte.

Aufgrund der Entfernung von Belgien nach hier brauchte es etwas Überredungskunst, doch nun kommt er am Samstag mit dem ICE von Brüssel nach Köln und wird dort von unserer FRANTIC QUO Band abgeholt. Somit ist er schon am Samstagabend mit zahlreichen Holländern, einigen Belgiern and some british im Publikum und steht dann am Sonntag auf unserer Bühne. Das ist für uns eine große Ehre und wird bestimmt nicht wiederkommen. Danke Richie.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, Du weißt aber schon, dass Richie ein großer Liebhaber von Guinness-Bier ist, oder? Hast Du Dich damit eingedeckt oder glaubst Du wir könnten ihn auf eine Kölsch-Probe einladen?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): … Hmh…, das wird nicht verraten, aber Du kannst Dir sicher sein, es wird ihm hier an nichts fehlen …

Presse-Media-Online.de: Auf wen können wir uns denn beim letzten Festival noch freuen?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Wir haben auch diesmal wieder richtig Vollgas gegeben und Europas beste Tributeband von Queen, The Sweet und Robbie Williams auf die Bühne nach Dautphe gelotst. Dazu Classic Rock mit Darko, die Beat Radicals und FRANTIC QUO. Für mich schließt sich mit diesem letzten Festival ein Kreis.

Es begann also mit Status Quo und Darko Ceh und endet damit. Songwriter Alan Crook wird auch wieder mit am Start sein, viele holländische und belgische, sowie einige britische Quo Fans haben bereits Tickets gebucht und die umliegenden Ferienwohnungen und Hotels belegt.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, jetzt mal Butter bei ´de Fische. Das ist doch nicht das letzte Konzert oder Festival was Du veranstaltest?

Martina Gerlach (Organisatorin „Rockin´ Hinterland“): Na ja, kleinere Konzerte wird es sicherlich noch geben, so habe ich zum Beispiel für nächstes Jahr wieder unseren „Ed Sheeran“ (Daniel East) geplant, eine Udo Jürgens-Tributeband ist in Planung und dann schauen wir mal, was mir noch so einfällt.

So ganz ohne geht es dann doch nicht, obwohl ich auch nicht jünger werde … (lacht….). Im übrigen sind die Kosten für Bühne, Künstler und Technik explodiert und das parallellaufende reguläre Restaurantgeschäft sind schon eine große Herausforderung.

We all know musicians, artists, performers, artists and many more who usually only stand on stage and impress us with their performance. Then there are the many organisers, the organizers who make everything possible and are a big part of the whole. But what is behind these people who inspire us? What do you do outside of your great work?

What drives you again and again to give us great experiences? How did you come to this style, what are your experiences and what are your plans for the future? Exactly the right thing for an interview, where you feel them on the tooth. Be curious about little interesting stories away from the stage and work and get to know unknown sides of these people who enrich our lives. Here we go!

Today we drove to the unpronounceable place Dautphe between Siegen and Marburg in Hessen, where we met Martina Gerlach, the organizer of „Rocking Hinterland“. From 11th to 13th August 2023 will be the 8th new edition of the legendary event, which has developed and established itself as a cult event over many years. But this time it should be the last event of „Rockin‘ Hinterland“ – The Final one!

Presse-Media-Online.de: Hi Martina, nice that you took some extra time for a little interview on your free Monday. Look what we brought you: Two delicious 6-packs of Kölsch, the beer you grew up with. Or do you even have Kölsch in your restaurant?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): Oh, that’s very kind of you. But look here: In addition to the regular tap system, we had an extra tap built for Kölsch and it runs like water here. Maybe it’s because the guests know that I’m fully behind it.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, before we talk about your event. Please tell us how you got here. You grew up in Siegburg, so a real Rhenish girl, how could that happen with Dautphe?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): … (laughs…) Well, I’m wondering that too… but what’s the saying: Where does love fall… In December, Thomas and I have been happily married for 35 years. He shares my love for rock music and we always have a lot of fun together every day. For me, Thomas was the best decision of my life.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Yes, you run a restaurant here with your husband Thomas, the „Chilis“, where you can eat excellently and also find a great beer garden. How long have you had the restaurant and how long have you and Thomas been in gastronomy?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): So Thomas has less to do with the „Chilis“. He helps out when there’s an unplanned „fire“ and flushes my beer lines every week. After 20 years as a secretary in the anteroom, the idea for the „Chilis“ came from a crazy idea on a skiing holiday. Back from there, I threw my whole life over the top and opened a restaurant. That was the second best decision of my life. By the way, next year the „Chilis“ will be 20 years old.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, a very serious topic: the Cologne carnival! You are a girl from Siegburg, so you actually grew up with the Cologne carnival. How do you deal with that here in Hessen? Are you still drawn to Cologne during the carnival season?

Martina Gerlach (organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“):  Absolutely. On 11.11. it starts and many of my Hessian friends are now accompanying me to Cologne, the capital of carnival in the Rhineland. This year it’s on November 11th with the entourage to the „Tanzbrunnen“, before that we’ll take the cult band „Brings & Beethoven Orchester“ with us on Roncalliplatz, right in front of our small village church, and unfortunately I can’t reveal yet which Christmas show I invite you to, like every year.

Over the years I’ve slowly introduced my husband to the Cologne carnival and you wouldn’t believe how confident he is in the „Lachende Kölnarena“ … (laughs….). The Hessians call it „Fasching“ and it is absolutely not comparable.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Let’s talk about your event „Rockin‘ Hinterland“. In a few weeks you will already have the 8th event. You can hear and read everywhere that it should be the last edition. Are you sure that this traditional rock music festival will really be the last time you stage it?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): Well, the main reason is that I’m not the youngest anymore and anyone who has ever organized something like this knows how much work and sleepless nights are involved. In addition to the regular restaurant business, this is hardly manageable. Now I broke my ankle four weeks ago and every walk is twice as difficult for me.

No, I don’t want to do that to myself anymore and yet I’m already planning the next concert for the „20th Chilis anniversary“ in the coming year. But not in the order of two or three days. Rather, I will then be a guest myself at the many festivals that I have been attending with my Quo friends for many years.

Presse-Media-Online.de: How did you actually come up with the event name „Rockin‘ Hinterland“? What’s behind it?

Martina Gerlach (organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): The name didn’t come from me and to be honest, I don’t think it’s a good thing either. Our former mayor had seen all the Status Quo posters at Chilis in 2013 and finally persuaded me to bring Status Quo to Dautphe. Since the festival should have a name and I was only the helper to get in touch with the band, the festival name was decided by the community.

Presse-Media-Online.de: The story with the festival started for you in 2014. How did you manage to engage Status Quo, this world-famous rock band from England, which has sold over 110 million records and in previous years was considered the best live band in the world and raced across the stages?

Martina Gerlach (organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): After our mayor at the time had convinced me, six months of intensive preparations followed with the municipality and the owner Mr. Schorge. Street lamps in the parking lot of the shopping center in Dautphe were to be removed to make room for the big stage, the helipad for the DRK was intended for the Hinterlandhalle.

Countless things had to be clarified, including the parking lot at the school, the bus detour, the production office in the town hall and backstage areas in the current VDK and „Chilis“. The concert provider Eventim was involved, the tickets were printed.

Everyone was in great anticipation, then 5 days before the concert came the news that Rick Parfitt had a heart attack in the Pula Arena in Croatia a few hours before the performance. The result: All the following concerts were cancelled, including our concert in Dautphe.

Presse-Media-Online.de: With all the preparatory work, that must have come as a shock to you?

Martina Gerlach (organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): You could say that. I thought I was in the wrong movie. When I got the first calls on Saturday, I initially thought it was a joke. Then I immediately got in touch with KBK, Quo’s agency in Munich, who knew nothing about it and initially reassured me that I should wait until Monday. However, that was a mistake.

If we had canceled the €40,000 stage for Quo on the Saturday before, we could have met the week’s deadline. From Monday to Sunday it wasn’t a whole week anymore and we had to pay a contractual penalty to the stage builder. Thank goodness the main sponsor took care of that. In general, we had a lot of trouble with KBK in the run-up to the organization, we couldn’t do anything right for them.

You have always tried to impose your will on us, be it in the design of the poster or the selection of the support band. Understandably, I don’t think much of this agency at all.

Presse-Media-Online.de: What did you do then? How did you react?

Martina Gerlach (organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): Many fans had tickets for the canceled concert and we tried to find a solution. Out of necessity, with the help of Hinterländer and an idea from Marita Gliesche, a stage, PA and bands were organized within 5 days and the „Rockin‘ Hinterland“ festival was born.

The local cover band „The Meadowbrookes“ with frontman Darko Ceh and the Belgian Status Quo tribute band „The Belgian Quo Band“, called „BQB“ for short, had offered to save what could be saved. Yes, and what can I say: The event was so successful that from now on a 2-day festival was held on the town hall square in front of the „Chilis“ and: This year for the last time.

Presse-Media-Online.de: This festival then established itself over the years. And it was always important to you that a Status Quo tribute band was in the program…

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): Yes, that’s right, I was and am always trying…

Presse-Media-Online.de: I miss a band here in your final program. „She’s got Balls“, this incredible amazing female AC/DC tribute band. Why didn’t it work out at the end this year?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): Yes, I completely agree with you. That’s a shame. You have always enriched our event enormously. Unfortunately, front singer Iris Boanta is invited to a wedding at „Rockin‘ Hinterland“ this year and cannot say goodbye. It really is an exceptional band, having recently been voted Europe’s best AC/DC cover band five times.

Presse-Media-Online.de: In 2017 you managed another coup with your event. John „Rhino“ Edwards, bass guitarist with Status Quo, played here on your stage with his second band „Rhinos Revenge“. How did you get it?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): The thing was the big hit. „Rhino“ was booked, everything went according to plan. Two months earlier then the chaos. Status Quo had a gig in Denmark the day before „Rhino“ was supposed to play here. That would have been Quo’s second cancellation.

But I wouldn’t be me if I put up with that. „Rhino“ knew about the whole fuss from 2014 and the reversal of the 2,500 tickets sold caused a lot of trouble and work. So we then looked for a solution together, posters had already been printed and a second air number would have called my competence into question.

And we found a solution: „Rhino“ boarded the plane in Denmark on Friday morning and was picked up by us at Frankfurt Airport at noon. My friend Ammi and I drove to the Loreley for the Status Quo gig a few weeks beforehand and collected „Rhinos“ guitars, stored them for a few weeks at the „Chilis“ so that „Rhino“ didn’t have to take them on the plane from Denmark as well. That was a lot of fun.

We had permission to drive through, we were allowed to drive the car to the back of the stage and we were backstage all day. We had coffee with Francis and chatted with everyone. At the concert we stood in the front row. A beautiful day. Then in January Ammi and I drove to London and brought back his guitars to „Rhino“. Another highlight, we had so much fun doing it.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, Corona arrived 3 years ago. How much did it affect your restaurant „Chilis“ and also „Rockin‘ Hinterland“?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): Not at all, on the contrary. My competitors all lazed about the lockdown and closed, while the „Chilis“ went full throttle and offered menus outside the home. It was a complete success from day one and we kept many guests from that time. Things are going better than ever since Corona. Thank you dear virus.

In 2021 we organized a light version of the „Rockin` Hinterland“. However, the health department had ordered seats and significantly restricted the number of spectators. We had a Beatles Tribute Band, whose frontman Peter Seel will be on our stage again this year as the frontman of the band Beat Radicals on Saturday. Of course, no one stayed seated, it was a beautiful evening.

Presse-Media-Online.de: We noticed that this time you are organizing a 3-day festival. What made you do it?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): That’s right. Look, it’s the last festival of its magnitude. And so we wanted to sweeten the end for the audience and added a 3rd day of the festival, Sunday morning. We are happy to have an original member of Status Quo, guitarist Richie Malone, on Dautphe’s stage together with the young German Quo Tribute Band FRANTIC QUO from North Rhine-Westphalia. It has come full circle.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Yes, the news from Status Quo guitarist Richie Malone made the rounds quickly. How did this extraordinary commitment come about? Is he coming over to Germany from the UK?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): When the posters and flyers for this year’s festival were already printed, I found out that Richie Malone was playing in Belgium on Thursday and Friday before our festival and was therefore „nearby“. Since my rock’n’roll heart wouldn’t rest from then on, I called him and asked if he wouldn’t like to hang on for a few more days and come to Dautphe.

Due to the distance from Belgium to here, it took a bit of persuasion, but now he’s coming to Cologne with the ICE on Saturday and will be picked up by our FRANTIC QUO band. So he’s already in the audience on Saturday evening with numerous Dutch, some Belgians and some British and then he’ll be on our stage on Sunday. This is a great honor for us and will definitely not come back. Thanks Richie.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, you do know that Richie is a big lover of Guinness beer, right? Have you stocked up on that or do you think we could invite him to a Kölsch rehearsal?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): … Hmh… that won’t be revealed, but you can be sure that he won’t be missing anything here…

Presse-Media-Online.de: Who else can we look forward to at the last festival?

Martina Gerlach (Organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): This time we really went full throttle again and brought Europe’s best tribute band from Queen, The Sweet and Robbie Williams to the stage in Dautphe. Plus Classic Rock with Darko, the Beat Radicals and FRANTIC QUO. For me, this last festival has come full circle.

So it started and ends with Status Quo and Darko Ceh. Songwriter Alan Crook will also be there again, many Dutch and Belgian, as well as some British Quo fans have already booked tickets and booked the surrounding holiday apartments and hotels.

Presse-Media-Online.de: Martina, now „butter by the fish“.  Isn’t that the last concert or festival you’re going to do?

Martina Gerlach (organizer „Rockin‘ Hinterland“): Well, there will certainly be smaller concerts, for example I have planned our „Ed Sheeran“ (Daniel East) for next year, a Udo Jürgens tribute band is in the planning and then we’ll see what else I can think of.

I can’t do without it, even though I’m not getting any younger … (laughs ….). Incidentally, the costs for the stage, artists and technology have exploded and the parallel regular restaurant business is a big challenge.
