The last scottish final McVention presented the fans with an outstanding and unforgettable event

Oh my God. What the hell was that a fantastic McVention event in Glasgow, Scotland. For all those who unfortunately couldn’t take part, here’s a little report about the hot and sweaty event, which will certainly find its place in the big Quo Family events.

Last weekend the “SLAY” location in Glasgow was the big mecca for Status Quo fans. Over 400 visitors spared no time and expense to celebrate a big rock party with their Scottish and English friends. And they came from everywhere. Fans flocked to the popular island from Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Sweden and many more countries. There was one main reason for this, because the organizers had announced in advance that it would be the very last McVention event in this form. This means that the large Status Quo family loses after the convention in Butlins/Minehead, another large institution of the popular meeting events.

We remember that Yvonne Hanvey, head of the “FTMO” fan club and organizer of the last four convention events, announced in the spring of this year that the popular convention will unfortunately no longer exist in this form in the future. Internal structural changes from 2024 within the popular Butlins area no longer allowed a new convention to be held. From this perspective alone, it was clear to many Quo fans that this was a must-see event, time and circumstances permitting.

And the organizers had really thought of everything and really put in the effort. Nine brilliant bands on three evenings, plus special Quo guests such as John Coghlan and Jackie Lynton, guaranteed that it would be a fantastic event. There’s also a large merchandising department with tons of old and new band T-shirts and of course charity donations. But the most important thing was that the big Quo family had another very special day where young and old came together. Then one or two tears of reunion were shed.

First of all, it is important to express special praise and recognition to the McVention crew. Everything was perfect, everything was fantastically prepared and organized. That’s exactly what the organizers Jay Fitzpatrick, Aidan Johnsen, Rhys Stevenson, Gary Aitchison, Jack Boustead from the Quo tribute band HEAVY TRAFFIC and a few more had set out to do (also Mr. A14 Thorben Busch). Above all, there is a very specific person from the organizing committee that needs to be highlighted. Jay Fitzpatrick!

I met Jay back in 2014 at the last Frantic Four concert in Dublin when, as a young lad, he delivered a fantastic warm-up with the then Status Quo tribute band STATUS QUOING with Peter Kelly. Over the years he has not only grown up, but also become an incredibly good musician and organizer. He has developed his guitar skills incredibly and masters the riffs with a breathtaking ease, as if he had never done anything else in his life. And then he is also a gifted drummer, which left all of us in front of the stage in amazement.

With his own company, the “Jay Fitz Patrick Academy of Music”, he has not only created a secure foothold for himself, but will also follow his great musical path, which will certainly end with legendary status. A very big thank you to you and your fantastic team for all the many hours of preparation that we don’t even see.

And now to the event: The Quo tribute band QUO-NO U.K. kicked off. Mark Hutchinson, Nigel Jewell, Jonny Hall and Tom Hearn heated up the crowd. The guys traveled from Tiverton, southwest England, and brought the McVention to a proper operating temperature. This also included guest musician Adam Beer, who played guitar for a classic, and Aidan Johnsen, who took the drummer’s chair for a hit.

Afterwards, the tribute band STATUS NO discussed the stage boards. Here Paul, Jim, Craig, Allan, Billy & Jamie provided clear proof that Quo Boogie Rock will still be “in” for the next 50 years. It was a great honor for both beginner bands to play here at McVention.

The end of the first day was the well-known formation of HEAVY TRAFFIC. The crew had a real home game in Glasgow and that’s exactly how they performed. Straightforward, straightforward, fast Quo Boogie at its best was the result, which knocked many visitors out of their shoes at the end of the opening day.

On Day 2, John Coghlan opened McVention with an audience.With Jackie Lynton, the organizers had chosen exactly the right man for this audience and the following band announcements. John talked about his long Quo life, answered countless questions and gave insights into his life. He then signed his new book “SPUD” for the fans, which sold extremely well.

At 6pm the rock band HERCULES took the stage and immediately followed up with a memorable performance. The Norwegians left nothing to be desired with rock and boogie and were the right musical opener for the second day.

Then it got sad for a few seconds, because with STATE OF QUO the English Status Quo tribute band climbed onto the stage, which heralded the end of their career. For decades, the formation was the figurehead for a Quo tribute band and is ending its fantastic musical career at the end of the year. Of course, it was clear that Ian Hill, Brian Brino Smith, Paul Carr and Jay Fitzpatrick were once again doing everything they could.

The final part was BAZ BARRY’S SPARE PARTS. Baz has also been an integral part of the Quo music scene for many years. The former frontman of John Coghlan’s Quo and founder of Predatür had a whole suitcase full of old Status Quo hits in his repertoire and hit exactly the right spot with the audience.

The start of the third day was reserved for Ian Hill. The organizers were able to convince him to play his fantastic live CD “KEEP ON ROCKIN‘ ON” live again in front of an unleashed McVention audience. He received support from Jay Fitzpatrick (who else?) and Traffic rocker Jack Boustead.

Then Baz Barry’s time began again, this time with PREDATUR. True to his own philosophy: “We were old school when it was new school, we just haven’t moved on, in fac” he rocked with his band. Once you’ve seen the band around Baz Barry, Jack Capon, Steve Jones and Chaz, you won’t be able to get away from them.

An auction followed, where many of Status Quo’s personal items were auctioned off. A buyer was found for everything and the best thing about the auction was the fact that the proceeds were donated to a charitable cause.

Then the last rock band was ushered in. STATUS QUOTES were announced from the Netherlands. What can you say? They simply exceeded everything you could expect anywhere. They came with a super interesting setlist where they played Quo classics that you’ve never heard live anywhere before. As the final encore, the crew picked up “4500 times” and sent the fans on a 17:24 minute quo journey that will definitely go down in the era of legends.

Toon Eppink, Raymond Nijenhuis, Harry Kruisselbrink and Lorenzo Hardijzer rocked a first-class show that was more than worthy of a McVention finale. They are without any ifs and buts one of the best Quo tribute bands our planet has to offer.

There was a touching scene at the end. Jay’s aunt (Wee t fife) climbed on stage and praised the young lad for his incredible musical and organizational achievements, including his entire crew. The visitors thanked the actors with long-lasting applause. And that was the moment when it overwhelmed Jay and he couldn’t hold back his tears anymore. All the pressure fell off him. The many hugs from his HEAVY TRAFFIC colleagues have rarely been so good for him.

For all of us it was also proof that Jay is not a machine, but a very likeable guy with big feelings. The very last farewell words from Jay Fitzpatrick were also worthy, as he brought his entire organizational crew onto the stage and, together with STATUS QUOTES, served the closing classic “Caroline”. Then it was over and for many fans it was time to say goodbye.

Farewell to an extraordinary event, which will certainly go down in the big Status Quo fan meetings. Even if there will be no more McVention and Convention in the future, there is good news at the end. In 2025 there will be a new edition of the popular fan meeting with QUOVENTION. On the 13th/14th in March 2025, Wolverhampton will become the great Mecca for all Status Quo fans. If you don’t want to wait that long, we recommend the “ROCK TIL YOU TROP Day”. This event takes place on Irthlingborough northamtonshire on 14th Septmber 2024.

My last special words go to a 75-year-old woman who I hold deeply in my heart. Miss Doris Watson, who is a little in poor health but didn’t miss the opportunity to attend the convention and McVention. Doris was there on all three days in Glasgow this time too. Doris, my very personal respect for you. Even if you can no longer rock out with us in the front row, I hope for myself and all of us that we will celebrate many more Quo festivals together. Stay healthy.

Oh mein Gott.  Was zur Hölle war das eine fantastische McVention-Veranstaltung im schottischen Glasgow. Für alle die, die leider nicht daran teilnehmen konnten, hier ein kleiner Report über das heiße und schwitzige Event, das sicher seinen Platz in den großen Quo-Family-Veranstaltungen finden wird.

Am vergangenen Wochenende war die Location „SLAY“ in Glasgow das große Mekka für Status Quo-Fans. Über 400 Besucher scheuten keine Zeit und Kosten, mit den schottischen und englischen Freunden eine große Rockparty zu feiern. Und sie kamen von überall. Aus Deutschland, den Niederlanden, Belgien, Frankreich, Schweden und vielen Ländern mehr, strömten die Fans auf die beliebte Insel. Das hatte vor allem auch einen Grund, denn im Vorfeld hatten die Organisatoren angekündigt, dass es das allerletzte McVention-Event in dieser Form sein wird. Damit verliert die große Status Quo-Familie nach der Convention in Butlins/Minehead, eine weitere große Institution der beliebten Meeting-Veranstaltungen.

Wir erinnern uns, dass Yvonne Hanvey, Leiterin des Fanclubs „FTMO“ und Organisatorin der letzten vier Convention-Veranstaltungen, im Frühjahr dieses Jahres mitgeteilt hatte, das es die beliebte Convention in dieser Form in Zukunft leider nicht mehr geben wird. Interne strukturelle Veränderungen ab 2024 innerhalb des beliebten Butlins-Areals ließen eine weitere Durchführung einer neuen Convention nicht mehr zu.

Allein aus diesem Gesichtspunkt war vielen Quo-Fans klar, dass man dieses Event unbedingt mitnehmen musste, sofern es die Zeit und Umstände zuließ. Und die Veranstalter hatten wirklich an alles gedacht und sich noch mal richtig ins Zeug gelegt. Neun brillante Bands an drei Abenden, dazu mit John Coghlan und Jackie Lynton spezielle Quo-Gäste waren Garant dafür, dass es ein phantastisches Event werden sollte. Dazu eine große Merchandising-Abteilung mit einer Unmenge von alten und neuen Band-T-Shirts und natürlich auch Wohltätigkeitsspenden. Das Wichtigste aber war, das die große Quo-Family wieder einen ganz besonderen Tag hatte, wo Jung und Alt zusammenkamen. Da wurde dann schon, dass ein oder andere Wiedersehens-Tränchen verdrückt.

Zunächst gilt es aber der McVention-Crew ein ganz besonderes Lob und Anerkennung auszusprechen. Es hat alles rund herum gepasst, alles war phantastisch vorbereitet und organisiert. Das hatten sich gerade die Organisatoren Jay Fitzpatrick, Aidan Johnsen, Rhys Stevenson, Gary Aitchison, Jack Boustead von der Quo-Tributeband HEAVY TRAFFIC und noch einige mehr (auch A14er Thorben Busch) auf die Fahne geschrieben. Allen voran gilt es eine ganz bestimmte Person aus dem Organisationskomitee besonders hervorzuheben. Jay Fitzpatrick!

Ich lernte Jay damals 2014 beim letzten Frantic Four-Concert in Dublin kennen, als er als junger Bursche mit der damaligen Status Quo Tributeband STATUS QUOING mit Peter Kelly bereits ein phantastisches Warm-up ablieferte. Über die vielen Jahre ist er nicht nur erwachsen geworden, sondern ein unfassbar guter Musiker und Organisator. Seine Gitarrenfähigkeiten hat er unglaublich weiterentwickelt und meistert die Riffs mit einer atemberaubenden Leichtigkeit, als hätte er in seinem Leben nie etwas anderes gemacht.

Und dann ist er auch noch ein begnadeter Schlagzeuger, was uns alle vor der Bühne nur mit Staunen zurückließ. Mit seiner eigenen Firma, der „Jay Fitzpatrick Academy of music“, hat er sich nicht nur ein sicheres Standbein geschaffen, sondern wird auch seinen großen musikalischen Weg gehen, der am Ende sicher mit einem Legendenstatus endet. Auf diesem Wege ein ganz großes Dankeschön an dich und dein phantastisches Team für all die vielen Stunden der Vorbereitung, die wir alle gar nicht sehen.

Und jetzt zum Event: Den Start machte die Quo Tributeband QUO-NO U.K. Mark Hutchinson, Nigel Jewell, Jonny Hall and Tom Hearn heizten der scharrenden Meute mächtig ein. Die Jungs reisten aus Tiverton, aus dem südwestlichen England an und brachten die McVention auf eine ordentliche Betriebstemperatur. Dazu gehörte auch Gastmusiker Adam Beer, der für einen Klassiker an der Gitarre mitwirkte und auch Aidan Johnsen, der für einen Hit den Stuhl des Schlagzeugers einnahm.

Danach berat die Tributeband STATUS NO die Bühnenbretter. Hier traten Paul, Jim, Craig, Allan, Billy & Jamie den klaren Beweis an, dass der Quo Boogie-Rock auch noch in den nächsten 50 Jahren „in“ sein wird. Für beide Beginner-Bands war es eine große Ehre, hier bei der McVention aufzuspielen.

Den Abschluss am ersten Tag bildete dann die bekannte Formation von HEAVY TRAFFIC. Die Crew hatte in Glasgow ein echtes Heimspiel und genauso traten sie auf. Schnörkelloser, gradliniger, schneller Quo Boogie vom Allerfeinsten war das Resultat, was etliche Besucher bereits am Ende des Eröffnungstages aus den Schuhen haute.

Am Day 2 eröffnete John Coghlan mit einer Audienz die McVention. Mit Jackie Lynton hatte die Organisatoren genau den richtigen Mann für diese Audienz und die folgenden Band-Ansagen auserkoren. John erzählte über sein langes Quo-Leben, beantwortete unzählige Fragen und gab Einblicke in sein Leben. Danach signierte er für die Fans sein neues Buch „SPUD“, was einen reißenden Absatz fand.

Um 18 Uhr stieg die Rockband HERCULES auf die Bühne und ließ gleich einen denkwürdigen Auftritt folgen. Die Norweger ließen keine Rock- und Boogie Wünsche offen und waren der richtige musikalische Opener für den zweiten Tag.

Dann wurde es für ein paar Sekunden traurig, denn mit STATE OF QUO stieg die englische Status Quo-Tributeband auf die Bühnenbretter, die das Ende ihrer Karriere eingeläutet haben. Über Jahrzehnte war die Formation das Aushängeschild für eine Quo-Tributeband und beendet Ende des Jahres ihre fantastische Musikerkarriere. Damit war natürlich klar, dass Ian Hill, Brino Smith, Paul Carr und Jay Fitzpatrick noch einmal alles rausknallten was möglich war.

Den Schlussteil bildete dann BAZ BARRY´S SPARE PARTS. Auch Baz ist seit vielen Jahren ein fester Bestandteil der Quo-Musikerszene. Der frühere Frontmann von John Coghlan’s Quo und Gründer von Predatür, hatte einen ganzen Koffer voll alter Status Quo-Hits in seinem Repertoire und traf dabei genau den richtigen Punkt beim Publikum.

Der Beginn des dritten Tages war dann Ian Hill vorbehalten. Die Organisatoren konnten ihn davon überzeugen, noch einmal seine grandiose Live-CD „KEEP ON ROCKIN´ ON“ live vor einem entfesselten McVention-Publikum zu spielen. Unterstützung erhielt er hier von Jay Fitzpatrick (wer sonst?) und Traffic-Rocker Jack Boustead.

Danach brach wieder die Zeit von Baz Barry an, diesmal mit PRETADUR. Getreu seiner eigenen Philosophie „“We’re old school. We were old school when it was new school, we just haven’t moved on, in fac”, rockte er mit seiner Band was das Zeug hielt. Wer die Band um Baz Barry, Jack Capon, Steve Jones und Chaz einmal gesehen hat, kommt nicht wieder von ihr los.

Im weiteren Verlauf schloss sich eine Auktion an, wo viele persönliche Dinge von Status Quo versteigert wurden. Für alle Dinge wurde ein Abnehmer gefunden und das beste an der Auktion war der Umstand, dass der Erlös einem gemeinnützigen Zweck zugeführt wird.

Danach wurde die letzte Rockband eingeläutet. Aus den Niederlanden hatten sich STATUS QUOTES angesagt. Was soll man sagen? Sie übertrafen einfach alles was man irgendwo erwarten konnte. Sie kamen mit einer superinteressanten Setlist, wo Quo-Klassiker gespielt wurden, die man noch nie live irgendwo gehört hat. Als letzte Zugabe hatte sich die Crew „4500 times“ aufgehoben und schickte damit die Fans auf eine 17:24 Minuten-Quo-Reise, die mit Sicheit in die Legenden-Ära eingehen wird.

Eine rührende Szene gab es dann am Schluss. Jays Tante (Wee t fife) kletterte auf die Bühne und lobte den jungen Burschen für seine unglaublichen musikalischen und organisatorischen Leistungen und schloss dabei auch seine gesamte Crew ein. Die Besucher dankten den Akteuren mit einem langanhaltenden Beifall. Und das war der Moment wo es Jay übermannte und er seine Tränen nicht mehr zurückhalten konnte. Der ganze Druck fiel von ihm ab.

Selten dürften ihm die vielen hugs von seinen HEAVY TRAFFIC-Kollegen so gutgetan haben. Für uns alle war es auch der Beweis, dass Jay keine Maschine ist, sondern ein sehr sympathischer Kerl mit großen Gefühlen.

Würdig waren auch die allerletzten Abschiedsworte von Jay Fitzpatrick, der dazu seine gesamte Organisationscrew auf die Bühne holte und zusammen mit STATUS QUOTES den Abschluss-Klassiker „Caroline“ kredenzte.

Dann war Schluss und für viele Fans hieß es Abschiednehmen. Abschied von einem außergewöhnlichen Event, was sicherlich in die großen Status Quo Fan-Meetings eingehen wird. Auch wenn es in Zukunft keine McVention und Convention mehr geben wird, so gibt es zum Abschluss gute Nachrichten. 2025 gibt es mit der QUOVENTION eine neue Auflage der beliebten Fan-Treffen. Am 13./14. März 2025 wird Wolverhampton zum großen Mekka aller Status Quo-Freunde werden. Wer nicht so lange warten will, dem sei der „ROCK TIL YOU TROP-Day ans Herz gelegt. Diese Veranstaltung findet am 14. September 2024 Irthlingborough in Northhamtonshire statt.

Meine letzten speziellen Worte gehen an eine 75-jährige Frau, die ich tief in mein Herz geschlossen habe. Misses Doris Watson, die zwar gesundheitlich ein wenig angeschlagen ist, die es sich aber nicht nehmen liess, den convention und McVention beizuwohnen. So war Doris auch diesmal an allen drei Tagen in Glasgow dabei. Doris, mein ganz persönlicher Respekt für dich. Auch wenn Du nicht mehr mit uns in der ersten Reihe abrocken kannst, wünsche ich mir und uns allen, dass wir noch viele Quo-Feste zusammenfeiern werden. Bleib gesund.
