Quo family very sad about the end of the convention due to internal Butlins changes – head of the „FTMO“ gave the Quo family unforgettable Quo weekends – 1000 thanks also go to the many helping hands!

A few days ago, the organizing committee of the Status Quo Convention informed us that there will unfortunately no longer be a convention in Butlins in the future, as it is no longer organizationally feasible due to internal changes and restructuring in Butlins. The entire Quo Family very much regrets this decision, but of course respects this decision. We are convinced that you have done everything to make another convention possible, but it was not to be.
And that’s exactly why now is the right moment to say a big thank you to the „Maker of Convention“, in the person of Yvonne and Paul Hanvey and the many accomplices, all of whom I can’t even mention here. Thank you for the self-sacrificing organizational work that you have done over many years. Thank you for the many hours and days you have invested. You all deserve the utmost respect and recognition that we can give. And it doesn’t matter which special Status Quo group you belong to on the internet.
The Quo Family got a big boost from the Frantic Four reunion in 2013 and 2014. In a few minutes, all the concerts were completely sold out and everyone took a piece of this incredible „Frantic Four era“ with them in their own way. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that we all saw a piece of Quo paradise there.
New Quo friendships quickly formed, old relationships were given new life and one was amazed at how many fans our great rock idols brought out. For many, these concerts were something absolutely unique and a great gift that hardly anyone would have believed in years ago.
Yvonne Hanvey then had the first Status Quo Convention in 2015. For this, the head of the official fan club „From the Makers of“ (FTMO) and her team chose exactly the place and location where the big story of Status Quo began in 1962 – after Minehead in the legendary Butlins in the south-west of England. With her well-known organizational passion, she managed a weekend where Status Quo fans from all over the world met and spent an unforgettable time.
The reunion of many fans, the cultivation of friendships, the many fantastic tribute bands, the big history presentations about Quo, the merchandising, the wonderful participation and support of the Shona Smile Foundation, the entire schedule and the whole logistics package were a great gift for everyone in the Quo family. And the fans came from far away. Nobody shied away from the expense and the hours of travel to the south-west of England.
You always had the feeling that I was coming home to the Quo family. There were no language barriers, because everyone took enough time for each other and if nothing worked, they knew how to help each other with hands and feet or drank a beer or two together. John Coghlan, Bob Young, John „Rhino“ Edwards, Leon Cave and Jackie Lynton and the great Quo tribute bands gave the event the appropriate setting.
And if the organizing committee still had slight doubts as to whether the convention would be accepted at all, it was already clear after the first day of the convention that this form of the convention had to be continued. The response was simply overwhelming and it was clear that there will be Convention II in 2017. And the festival was also something special, again packed with 11 top-class bands.
But also covered by a sad shadow. Rick Parfitt, Status Quo’s machine, passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Eve 2016, leaving many Quo fans in shock. A condition that lasts for many months and even today. Many Quo fans went to Butlins with mixed feelings. On the one hand the feeling of joy at seeing you again, but on the other hand also the feeling of sadness about Parfitt’s death, which maybe could be processed and shared a little here.
And let’s be honest: Rick Parfitt sent us an angel to Butlins this very weekend in the form of Joakim Rognedal. Joakim was the „Parfitt guitarist“ in the Swedish formation „Sound of Status“. He looked a lot like Rick Parfitt at the time and when he started out with his crew, with long mane of hair in denim clothes, moving and singing in proper Parfitt manner, many saw him as the young Parfitt of the ’70s and ’80s. It was like a ‚rebirth‘, old crusted sad spots turning into a smile that had just disappeared for so long.
Many were not ashamed of their tears and let their feelings and thoughts run free. It was also proof that things are going on, that Rick lives on in all of us and that his legacy will continue to be carried out into the world by the many great tribute bands. For many fans it was balm for the sad souls, a way of coping with grief. That’s why this Convention II was so important and valuable.
Special guests of honor this time were former drummer John Coghlan, longtime tour manager and songwriter Bob Young and co-founder Alan Lancaster, who had traveled all the way from Australia. In an unforgettable interview and question time, the fans learned a lot about the time when Quo was still in its infancy. After three exciting, unforgettable days, the convention had an impressive finale that got under everyone’s skin.
After John Coghlan’s Quo had introduced the finale, Rick Parfitt’s son appeared and spread an emotional sadness with „Living on an Island“ in memory of his father, who died much too early. But with the subsequent „Big Fat Mama“ he pulled the audience out of the sad lethargy, ensured a direct relaxation of feelings and let a grandiose celebration end follow. Many were finally able to make inner peace with the situation after the convention.
Two years later in 2019, organizer Yvonne Hanvey and her valuable team presented the 3rd edition of the convention, which went down in history. Again it was 3 days with fantastic live bands, a creative and interesting supporting program and many surprises. For the fans, the convention had long since become a “Quo mecca”. Nobody was interested in who you are, where you come from, what you do, no, you immediately had a warm feeling that you belonged to the big Quo family.
It doesn’t matter whether you arrived in a thick Quo jacket or just wanted to be a guest, you were warmly welcomed in the Quo family. And yes, age didn’t stop at the fans either. It was getting harder and harder to fit into the old jeans and t-shirts from yesteryear, hair was getting shorter and thinner, bones weren’t coping, but that didn’t stop anyone from not starting here at Butlins be. And the greatest thing of all was that many Quo fans brought their children to show them where Mom and Dad used to rock until dawn when they were young.
The best thing about all these days: no one of the big ones was unapproachable – on the contrary: Lancaster, Young & Coghlan took all the time in the world for a missing signature in their own Quo collection for fans, a photo or a small conversation with the visitors. Everything was possible. The same was true for Jackie Lynton, who left something for eternity with the unmistakable statement „Is there anybody out there who wants to rock…“ on what is probably the best live album of 1977. This time, too, it was a special kind of finale.
At the end, all the artists of the evening gathered on the stage. And when finally Alan Lancaster started the „Roadhouse Blues“ with his inimitable rock voice, nobody could be held back. Accompanied by an enthusiastic John Coghlan & Bob Young, it was exactly the crowning highlight of the entire convention. What a great experience that would never have happened without the convention.
Then Corona came and nothing was the same anymore.The virus determined our lives, everyone was affected, had to limit themselves, the entire music scene collapsed and everyone’s health was the top priority. The convention also faded into the background, which was understandable and understandable.But this great, unique community lived on in each of us and there were quite a few who especially felt that Convention IV in 2022 was a redeeming festival because this f****g Corona finally fell to the ground.
All the greater was the joy of seeing the Quo-Family again, where an incredible 1,100 participants were counted. But this time, too, it had the form of a memoriam festival. A year earlier Alan Lancaster died in Australia. In the wild 70s he was the main driving force behind the bass and had a decisive influence on the band. So we were all very lucky that Alan was a guest at the 2019 convention and that we were able to experience these wonderful moments with him. Now he rocks with Rick in rock heaven….
Yvonne had once again put together a superlative convention program. The “Quo mum of all Quo meetings” left nothing to chance. In addition to John Coghlan, Jackie Lynton and Leon Cave, former Quo drummer Jeff Rich was also part of the party. On stage, every band earned their absolute respect and recognition, with one thought always in the foreground: Carrying the Quo-Boogie further and further into the world.
With „John Coghlan’s Quo“, Hanvey & Co. then presented the right final headliner. For John it was the final concert, the last live act with JCQ, with which he could look back on a breathtaking career. All Quo fans gave the Quo founding member his deserved applause and recognition, which he more than deserves.
For the many fans it was then time to head home. Countless hours in the car, bus, airport and plane. But in the end everyone was proud and happy to have experienced this event. On the other hand, the work for Yvonne Hanvey’s organizational team was not quite done yet. When processing the logistical tasks, the many helpers were again challenged and some fell into bed exhausted after a few festival beers together.
The convention is over now, the final curtain at Butlins has finally fallen. Now it´s history. What remains are the many beautiful memories with the entire Quo-Family, the wonderful time together, the countless friendships that we have just found through the convention. It was exhilarating, each convention had its own special appeal and character.
Let’s all be happy and happy that we were able to experience all this. That’s why we can’t say it often enough: A big thank you again to Yvonne, the „mother of all Quo meetings“, my personal „Quo-Mum“ and her fantastic Butlins organization crew. You are the greatest for us! Thanks! And one thing is also clear: „Never say never“! Maybe it will continue somewhere in some form…

Vor einigen Tagen teilte uns das Organisationskomitee der Status Quo Convention mit, dass es in Zukunft leider keine Convention mehr in Butlins geben wird, da es aufgrund von internen Veränderungen und Umstrukturierungen in Butlins organisatorisch nicht mehr machbar ist. Die gesamte Quo Family bedauert diesen Entschluss sehr, respektiert aber diese Entscheidung selbstverständlich. Wir sind überzeugt, dass ihr alles getan habt um eine weitere Convention möglich zu machen, aber es sollte nicht sein.
Und genau deswegen ist jetzt der richtige Moment, den „Maker of Convention“, in Person von Yvonne und Paul Hanvey und den vielen Helfershelfern, die ich hier alle gar nicht erwähnen kann, ein ganz dickes Dankeschön zu sagen. Danke für die aufopferungsvolle Organisationsarbeit, die ihr über viele Jahre geleistet habt. Danke für die vielen Stunden und Tage die ihr investiert habt. Euch allen gebührt der allergrößte Respekt und die größte Anerkennung, die wir nur geben können. Und dabei ist es unwichtig, welcher speziellen Status Quo-Gruppe man im Internet angehört.
Die Quo Family hat durch die Frantic Four-Reunion in 2013 und 2014 einen großen Aufschwung erlebt. In wenigen Minuten waren damals alle Konzerte restlos ausverkauft und jeder hat auf seine Weise ein Stück dieser unglaublichen „Frantic Four-Zeit“ mitgenommen. Ich glaube nicht das ich übertreibe, wenn ich behaupte, dass wir da alle ein Stück des Quo-Paradieses gesehen haben.
Es bildeten sich schnell neue Quo-Freundschaften, alte Beziehungen erhielten wieder neues Leben und man war doch erstaunt, wie viele Fans unsere großen Rockidole hervorholten. Für viele waren diese Konzerte etwas absolut einmaliges und ein großes Geschenk, woran kaum jemand vor Jahren geglaubt hätte.
Yvonne Hanvey ließ dann 2015 die erste Status Quo Convention folgen. Dafür suchte sich die Leiterin des offiziellen Fanclubs „From the Makers of“ (FTMO) mit ihrem Team genau den Platz und die Örtlichkeit aus, wo 1962 die große Geschichte von Status Quo begann – nach Minehead ins legendäre Butlins im Südwesten Englands. Mit ihrer bekannten Organisations-Leidenschaft schaffte sie ein Wochenende, wo sich Status Quo-Fans aus der ganzen Welt trafen und eine unvergessene Zeit verbrachten.
Das Wiedersehen vieler Fans, das Pflegen der Freundschaften, die vielen phantastischen Tribute-Bands, die großen Geschichts-Präsentationen um Quo, das Merchandising, die wunderbare Teilnahme und Unterstützung der Shona Smile Foundation, der gesamte Ablaufplan und das ganze Logistik-Paket waren ein großes Geschenk für jeden einzelnen in der Quo-Family. Und die Fans kamen von weit her. Niemand scheute die Kosten und die stundenlangen Anreisen in den Südwesten Englands.
Man hatte immer das Gefühl – ich komme nach Hause zur Quo-Family. Sprachbarrieren gab es nicht, weil sich jeder genug Zeit für den anderen nahm und wenn gar nichts mehr half, wusste man sich mit Händen und Füßen zu helfen oder trank das ein oder andere Bier zusammen. John Coghlan, Bob Young, John „Rhino“ Edwards, Leon Cave und Jackie Lynton und die tollen Quo-Tributebands gaben der Veranstaltung den gebührenden Rahmen.
Und hatte das Organisationskomitee vielleicht noch leichte Zweifel ob die Convention überhaupt angenommen wird, so war bereits nach dem ersten Convention-Day klar, dass diese Form der Convention unbedingt seine Fortsetzung finden muss. Der Zuspruch war einfach überwältigend und damit war klar, dass es 2017 die Convention II geben wird. Und auch das Festival war etwas Besonderes, wieder gespickt mit 11 Bands der Extraklasse.
Aber auch von einem traurigen Schatten überdeckt. Rick Parfitt, die Maschine von Status Quo, verstarb völlig überraschend an Heiligabend 2016 und versetzte viele Quo-Fans in einen Schockzustand. Ein Zustand der bei vielen lange Monate und auch noch heute andauert. Viele Quo-Fans fuhren mit gemischten Gefühlen nach Butlins. Zum einen das Gefühl der Freude auf ein Wiedersehen, zum anderen aber auch das Gefühl der Traurigkeit über Parfitts Tod, was man hier vielleicht ein wenig verarbeiten und teilen konnte.
Und sind wir doch ehrlich: Rick Parfitt schickte uns genau an diesem Wochenende einen Engel nach Butlins in Form von Joakim Rognedal. Joakim war der „Parfitt-Gitarrist“ bei der schwedischen Formation „Sound of Status“. Sein Aussehen ähnelte sehr dem damaligen Rick Parfitt und als er mit seiner Crew loslegte, mit langem Mähnenhaar in Jeans-Klamotten, sich in richtiger Parfitt-Manier bewegte und sang, sahen viele in ihm den jungen Parfitt der 70er und 80er Jahre. Es war wie eine „Wiedergeburt“, alte verkrustete traurige Stellen verwandelten sich in ein Lächeln, was so lange Zeit einfach verschwunden war.
Viele schämten sich ihrer Tränen nicht, ließen den Gefühlen und Gedanken freien Lauf. Es war auch der Beweis dafür, dass es weitergeht, dass Rick in uns allen weiterlebt und sein Erbe auch in Zukunft von den vielen tollen Tributebands in die Welt hinausgetragen wird. Für viele Fans war es Balsam auf die traurigen Seelen, eine Art der Trauerbewältigung. Allein deswegen war diese Convention II so wichtig und wertvoll.
Besondere Ehrengäste waren diesmal wieder der ehemalige Drummer John Coghlan, der langjährige Tour-Manager und Songwriter Bob Young und der extra aus Australien angereiste Mitbegründer Alan Lancaster. In einer unvergessenen Interview- und Fragestunde erfuhren die Fans vieles über die Zeit, als Quo noch in den Kinderschuhen steckte. Nach drei aufregenden unvergessenen Tagen hatte die Convention ein eindrucksvolles Finale, was jedem unter die Haut ging.
Nach dem John Coghlan´s Quo das Finale eingeleitet hatte, erschien der Sohn von Rick Parfitt und versprühte mit „Living on an Island“ eine emotionale Traurigkeit zum Gedenken an seinen viel zu früh verstorbenen Vater. Doch mit dem anschließenden „Big Fat Mama“ zog er das Publikum raus aus der traurigen Lethargie, sorgte für direkte Entkrampfung der Gefühle und ließ ein grandioses Feier-Ende folgen. Viele konnten nach der Convention endlich einen inneren Frieden mit der Situation schließen.
Zwei Jahre später in 2019 präsentierte Organisatorin Yvonne Hanvey mit ihrem wertvollen Team die 3. Auflage der Convention, die in die Geschichte einging. Wieder waren es 3 Tage mit fantastischen Live-Bands, einem kreativen interessanten Begleitprogramm und vielen Überraschungen. Für die Fans war die Convention schon lange zu einem „Quo-Mekka“ geworden. Da interessierte es niemanden wer Du bist, wo Du herkommst, was Du machst, nein Du hattest direkt ein warmes Gefühl, dass Du zur großen Quo-Familie gehörst.
Egal ob Du mit dicker Jeans-Kutte ankamst oder einfach nur Gast sein wolltest, Du warst in der Quo-Family herzlich willkommen. Und ja, auch bei den Fans machte das Alter nicht halt. Es wurde immer schwieriger sich in die alten Jeans und T-Shirts aus vergangener Zeit hinein zu zwängen, die Haare wurden kürzer und weniger, die Knochen machten nicht mehr so mit, aber das hinderte niemanden daran, hier in Butlins nicht am Start zu sein. Und das allergrößte war, dass viele Quo-Fans ihre Kinder mitbrachten um ihnen zu zeigen, wo Mama und Papa in ihrer Jugendzeit bis zum Morgengrauen rockten.
Das allerschönste an all diesen Tagen: Niemand der Großen war unnahbar – im Gegenteil: Lancaster, Young & Coghlan nahmen sich alle Zeit der Welt für eine fehlende Unterschrift in der eigenen Quo-Sammlung für Fans, ein Foto oder ein kleines Gespräch mit den Besuchern. Alles war machbar. Das gleiche galt für Jackie Lynton, der mit der unverwechselbaren Ansage „Is there anybody out there who wants to rock…“ auf dem wohl besten Live-Album 1977 etwas für die Ewigkeit hinterließ.
Auch diesmal wurde es ein Finale der besonderen Art. Am Ende versammelten sich alle Künstler des Abends auf der Bühne. Und als zu guter Letzt Alan Lancaster mit seiner unnachahmlichen Rockstimme den „Roadhouse Blues“ anstimmte, war niemand mehr zu halten. Begleitet von einem begeisterten John Coghlan & Bob Young war es genau der krönende Höhepunkt der gesamten Convention. Welch ein tolles Erlebnis, was es ohne die Convention nie gegeben hätte.
Dann kam Corona und nichts war mehr so wie es war. Das Virus bestimmte unser Leben, jeder war davon betroffen, musste sich einschränken, die gesamte Musikszene brach ein und die Gesundheit von jedermann stand an oberster Stelle. Auch die Convention geriet in den Hintergrund, was verständlich und nachvollziehbar war. Aber diese große einmalige Gemeinschaft lebte weiter in jedem von uns und es gab nicht wenige, die speziell die Convention IV in 2022 als erlösendes Festival empfanden, weil dieses f****g Corona endlich zu Boden ging.
Umso größer war die Wiedersehensfreude der Quo-Family, wo man unfassbare über 1.100 Teilnehmer zählte. Aber auch diesmal hatte es eine Form eines Memoriam-Festival. Ein Jahr zuvor verstarb Alan Lancaster in Australien. Gerade er war in den wilden 70er Jahren der Antriebsmotor am Bass und prägte die Band entscheidend. Somit konnten wir uns alle sehr glücklich schätzen, dass Alan bei der Convention 2019 Gast war und wir diese wunderbaren Momente mit ihm zusammen erleben durften. Jetzt rockt er mit Rick im Rockhimmel…
Wieder hatte Yvonne ein Convention-Programm der Superlative zusammengestellt. Die „Quo-Mum aller Quo-Meetings“ überließ nichts dem Zufall. Neben John Coghlan, Jackie Lynton, Leon Cave war auch der ehemalige Quo-Drummer Jeff Rich mit von der Partie. Auf der Bühne verdiente sich jede Band ihren absoluten Respekt und die Anerkennung, wobei ein Gedanke immer im Vordergrund stand: Den Quo-Boogie immer weiter und weiter in die Welt hineinzutragen.
Mit „John Coghlan´s Quo“ präsentierte Hanvey & Co. dann noch den richtigen Abschluss-Headliner. Für John war es das Abschlusskonzert, der letzte Live-Act mit JCQ, womit er auf eine atemberaubende Karriere zurückblicken konnte. Alle Quo-Fans zollten dem Quo-Gründungsmitglied seinen verdienten Beifall und Anerkennung, die er mehr als verdient hat.
Für die vielen Fans hieß es dann den Heimweg anzutreten. Unzählige Stunden im Auto, Bus, Flughafen und Flugzeug. Aber letzten Endes war jeder stolz und froh dieses Event erlebt zu haben. Auf der anderen Seite war die Arbeit für das Organisationsteam um Yvonne Hanvey noch nicht ganz getan. Bei der Abarbeitung der logistischen Aufgaben wurden die vielen Helfer nochmal sehr gefordert und manch einer fiel nach ein paar gemeinsamen Festival-Bierchen übermüdet ins Bett.
Jetzt ist Schluss mit der Convention, der letzte Vorhang in Butlins ist jetzt endgültig gefallen. Alles ist Geschichte. Was bleibt sind die vielen schönen Erinnerungen mit der gesamten Quo-Family, die wunderbare gemeinsame Zeit, die unzähligen Freundschaften, die wir gerade durch die Convention gefunden haben. Es war berauschend, jede Convention hatte ihren speziellen Reiz und Charakter.
Lasst uns alle froh und glücklich sein, dass wir das alles erleben durften. Deshalb können wir es nicht oft genug sagen: Ein großes Dankeschön nochmal an Yvonne, die „Mutter aller Quo-Meetings“, meine persönliche „Quo-Mum“ und ihre einmalige fantastische Butlins-Organisations-Crew. Ihr seid für uns die Größten! Danke! Und eines ist auch klar: „Never say never“! Vielleicht geht es irgendwo in irgendeiner Form weiter…
